Teaching is a thankless task

After 34 years in the profession, I have finally retired as an ordinary teacher. I would like to make a few comments to show that teaching is not a bed of roses. One must possess guts if steel to withstand all the injustices practised in schools.

A teacher is an all-purpose worker in school. Besides his own teaching duties, he has to stand in for others who are absent.

Relieving others is never the duty of the headmaster or his assistants. Promotions or pay rise is out if you are not an apple polisher or active in politics.

Here, it is not the achievement of the students that count. You can slog your guts out for the school but no one will notice you.

How many senior teachers are given the title of Tokoh Guru?

Only headmaster and education officials are nominated to receive this title. Do they do enough teaching to deserve this nomination?

For 34 years I have taught many children and many today are successful in life.

I have earned my living and have retired - never mind the promotion now. It`s goodbye to teaching for me!
